As even their Proclamations clearly show, the leaders of the uprising themselves had been striving for this goal a century prior the event, as will be apparent from Chapter 2 and 3. Through information provided about uprising at more than 190 places, it will be seen that, barring a few exceptions, the promoters, leaders and beneficiaries were all muslim. Sikhs, Marathas and Rajputs assisted the British to quell the rebellion, thus preventing the restoration of the Mughal Dynasty.
