This study examines the growth and development of the Indian Navy in the context of the initial fears and apprehensions in Southeast Asia over India’s naval expansion. Contrary to the earlier perceptions in some quarters, it argues that India has not engaged in power projection in Southeast Asia. Within the context of growing Indian maritime interests and concerns, an attempt is made to analyse the emerging naval balance in this region.
