Return to Sinai: The Arab Offensive October 1973 $30.00
by Faiz Hakim Date Added: Friday 28 March, 2008
The author has done a fine job of presenting a view of this conflict that is not often addressed. Indeed if the military goals for the combatants were as alluded to by the author then Egypt won its portion of the conflict. But it is also clear that audacity with a degree of breaking of the rules of war along with a heavy dose of luck had almost turned the course of the war in favour of Israel and it was only a matter of time when the "victory" would have turned into utter defeat for Egypt. Nonetheless this "victory" gave the courage to the Egyptians to come to terms with Israel in a respectable manner. And the peace has held thus far. Of course Sadat paid a havey price for this brave step. The situation with Syria was of course different as was the case with Iraqi and other Arab forces. I was surprised to hear about the presence and performance of Moroccan and Yemeni contingents and the great but futile effort by the Iraqi forces. This book also shows why the Israeli model cannot be copied by India given its large geographic size, diversity of geography, etc, etc. The books shows how a perfect mating of political aims and military strategy with the right systems, in this case battlefield missile umbrella and the tactics of fighting within this umbrella by Egyptians, turned the tide in favor of the militarily weaker but numerically superior Egyptians. The lesson for us is to commit miltarily only when there is ample political will and a well-define goal. For instance the large-scale mobilization of a few years ago without a clearly defined strategy of how to conclude this sabre-rattling was a debacle. On the other hand a clearly defined aim of removing the intruders from the heights of Kargil which we defined as our own without violating the enemy's airspace thereby reassuring the world including the enemy of of our intentions brought the world opinion on to our side. Clever use of media helped. Same government two different results.
