Thimayya: An Amazing Life $43.00
by Faiz Hakim Date Added: Thursday 02 July, 2009
This is a very fine book. I loved reading about this other great soldier from the South and a relative of Cariappa who was brave, bold, charming and a professional to his very core and whose praises are sung by not only Indians but also people of Cyprus and other Nations. He was a tough man who led his men wonderfully during World War 2 and beyond. He was the only Indian to lead a brigade level formation or higher during the Second World War. Not only was he a great brave soldier it also seems like he was a fine family man. It seems to me that he is more deserving of a Field Marshal title than his relative Cariappa. In any case they were both fine Indian citizens who kept "vigil at the border" so that the rest of their fellow citizens could lead peaceful lives and progress. This book is full of information about his life. It does seem like he threw in the towel a couple of times in his career and a fortunate set of circumstances came to his aid which also proved lucky for the Indian Army. He had a good relationship and great admiration for Nehru but very little regard for Menon and others. He was a leader in the mold of Patton et al. A sense of lan and good presentation in addition to solid training and practice. He was quite popular with women as was Manekshaw. Obviously a person on whose life a movie or two could be made. It seems that Mankeshaw and many others hold the opinion that Thimayya, their senior, was the most effective General in the Indian Army. Indeed an amazing life. I had not known a lot about him till I read the book. Thanks for a well written book.
