This book is excellent. It brings to light the grooming of a young royal who was flawed in many respects into a conqueror of some repute and later a ruler of reasonable judgment. One can see how courage, tactics, more vision than his contemporaries, innate sense of fairness, magnanimity combined with ruthlessness where necessary led this individual to establish his dynasty as the rulers of India. At the same time it is clear that his people were not the Mongols of old who were undefeated in campaigns but instead were better fighters and incredibly lucky to come through as victors in South Asia. I like the flavor for the times that this book gives the reader and the genuineness of Babur's writings. Babur was a poet at heart and essentially a decent ruler. Not perfect but decent.
