My years with the I.A.F. $32.00
by Faiz Hakim Date Added: Thursday 10 April, 2008
This is a great book. It seems to me that we Indians were incredibly lucky to have had people of the caliber of or Lal and Menkshaw in-charge of the two most used branches of the military during this war along with Mrs. Gandhi at the helm of political affairs. Mr. Lal's innate goodness as a human being and his intelligence is self-evident throughout the book. He was an intellectual with a deep understanding of the issues facing the Indian armed forces in carrying out the political aims of the leadership. He makes some candid remarks about the military leaders that from the mouth of anyone else would sound as sour grapes and simply mean but from him they sound to be without malice, honest and simply an important point of view stated in the best interest of the Nation. I believe he too deserves to be appointed Air Marshal if he is not already one a la Arjun Singh. His personality was the perfect complement to that of General Manekshaw's. Two prima donnas would have butted heads but Mr Lal's quieter personality but as sharp an intellect and very academic approach to problems stood him in good stead and helped IAF defeat PAF in 1971 unlike 1965 in my opinion. IAF under Lal put the lessons it learnt in 1965 to great use and took the war to the enemy as evidenced by the victory in the air and the support provided to our troops at every step of the way both in the West and all the way to Dhaka in the East. I hope Mr. Lal is not unique in his abilities and the leaders of the IAF post Lal are intelelctually equally adept. This book is not without its drawbaks amongst them are the numerous spelling erros, paucity of photographs from Mr Lal's life and the wars, etc. I recommend this book without reservations.
