Lost Victory: The Rise & Fall of LTTE Supremo, V. Prabhakaran $37.00
by Faiz Hakim Date Added: Tuesday 19 April, 2011
This is a very good book. The organization of this book is a little unusual. It starts off with the end of Parbhakaran and then goes back to the beginning. Some of it is repetitious but still it is a fantastic book for understanding the history of the people of Sri Lanka from the point of view of the major groups and the source of their dispute. It gives a very detailed account of the transformation of the Sri Lankan armed forces into an efficient fighting force capable of defeating the most sophisticated insurgency/terrorist outfit in the world. The book also highlights the organizational abilities, the fighting abilities and the charisma of Parbhakaran the terrorist and the LTTE. It highlights Parbhakaran's strategic blunder in not resolving the dispute at a stage that would have proved advantageous for him and the LTTE but instead carrying on the fight not just against Sri Lanka but also against India - the hand that unfortunately fed him. The book does not shy away from holding India culprit for its actions in Sri Lanka. It also does not shy away from highlighting the atrocities committed by LTTE and by the Sri Lankan armed forces to a lesser extent. Some of the writing brings the war alive. One has to admire the military and political cooperation amongst the Sri Lankans that brought them this great victory not unlike 1971 when the political will of India was matched with its military might and brought us a great victory against Pakistan. There are lessons in this book for India as the Maoist insurrection in India gathers momentum. External threat, Pakistan, is easier to deal with than internal threats like Kashmir/Maoists in India and Tamils in Sri Lanka. We Indians in the US like to laugh at the lack of knowledge of average Americans regarding the rest of the world and I think it is equally true of us Indians as to how little we know about our smaller neighbors. I thank you General Mehta for writing such an informative book. I would like to see a book where the maps matched the writing so that one could make out how the campaign progressed. Perhaps a DVD that showed the progress of the campaign would be wonderful. This applies even more so for all the books regarding India-Pakistan wars. As an aside I was keen to read that the Sri Lankan armed forces got inside the decision cycle of the LTTE and this reminds me of the other great book I read recently about the legendary "40 second" John Boyd who was one of the greatest thinkers of modern warfare and who pointed out the flaws in Clausewitz thinking and instead promoted the idea of getting inside the decision cycle of one's enemy.
