This book is a descriptive account of the brilliant campaigns conducted by von Manstein in the operational fields of Poland, France and later Russia against the massive historical background of the Second World War. This very interesting account of one of the greatest Generals of the Second World War's campaigns in Russia. is indispensable for anUnder standing of the tremendous responsibilities and preoccupations of a Commander-in-Chief in the conduct of huge armies spread over vast territories demanding his presence here, there and everywhere.
The book goes on to describe the belated trial of this aged German General, which raised protests in both the houses of British Parliament and raising of a fund for his defence towards which Winston Churchill was one of the first to subscribe. Contrary to the Geneva Prisoners of War Convention, the Court had no officer of the rank of von Manstein. It admitted evidence that would not be tolerated in any British or American Court, including hearsay evidence at third or fourth hand. Even then his acquittal on all charges affecting his personal conduct and holding him responsible for orders issued by Hitler and the German High, Command and executed by subordinates, place him in the rank of martyrs like John of Arc and mar the proud story of British justice.
