A Ridge Too Far: War in the Kargil Heights 1999 $80.00
by Faiz Hakim Date Added: Thursday 26 May, 2011
This book is just fantastic. It walks the reader through the major battles step by step. The maps that accompany the chapters lay out the big picture regarding the operational assignments of the various forces involved in the war clearly. Along with the maps are a number of very good pictures that bring to life the names of men and places that one had heard of during these operations. For instance reading this book I came across the name of a senior of mine from my high school in New Delhi, Amul Asthana, of whose wrestling prowess I had heard back in my school days. This book, along with General Malik's book, are the definitive final words on this conflict between India and Pakistan. When one looks at the maps and the pictures one gets a true sense of the enormity of the task that our soldiers were assigned and my admiration for their courage and skill has risen as a result. One also appreciates the logistical issues involved in moving a sizable force relatively quickly to tackle a well motivated and entrenched enemy. I also liked the little snippets about the men who stood out in these actions having done more than most. The description of the enemy soldiers is also not cartoonish but instead acknowledges their skill and bravery. I was a tad disappointed not to find any mention of Lt. Haneefuddin. I hope the author will try and correct this ommision in subsequent editions. There are not too many Muslims in the armed forces and those who are there and serve well should be recognized, in order to set positive examples for other Muslims to follow. One of the best books I have read from an Indian author.
